Scope and Contents

This collection contains a diary kept during 1862 and 1863 by George B. Dane of Company E, 26th Indiana Volunteers, as well as an Indianapolis News article about the discovery of the diary in 1960.


Biographical Information

George B. Dane was born in 1835 in Massachusetts. He married Martha A. Coburn on October 9, 1851, and the couple relocated to Marion County, Indiana. Dane enlisted in the 26th Indiana Volunteers with the rank of sergeant. The regiment became part of the Department of Missouri, participating in battles in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, including the Battle of Prairie Grove. Following the Siege of Vicksburg, the regiment moved into Louisiana, where Dane died of illness on December 12, 1863.
