Scope and Contents

This collection contains digital images of the church parish register for St. John's Church in Helena, Arkansas. The register contains church information including lists of parishioners, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, burials and offerings.

Historical Information

The first church services for this church were held by Bishop George Washington Freeman in October 1846. Over the next six years, Bishop Freeman would visit and administer to the needs of the congregation, but the parish was not organized as St. John's Church until November 29, 1853. At some point after that Reverend B. R. S. Boemond began efforts to erect a church building. A building was constructed, and the first service was held on March 30, 1861. The church was closed during much of the Civil War, though it was occasionally used for religious as well as military functions during that time. The church re-opened in the fall of 1865 under the leadership of Reverend Otis Hackett. A new church building was constructed in 1896. The register contains church information including lists of parishioners, baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, burials and offerings from its beginning to 1913.
