Scope and Contents

This collection contains a photocopy of a diary kept by Rufus W. Daniel, of Princeton, Arkansas, of Company C, 6th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. It is dated March 6, 1862, through March 1, 1864, and reports extensively on the movements of the unit and the battles they participated in.


Biographical Information

Rufus W. Daniel was born in Tennessee on September 10, 1837, to William and Sarah Daniel. The family moved to Dallas County, Arkansas, in the mid-1840s. In June 1861, Daniel enlisted in Captain F. J. Cameron's Dallas Rifles, 6th Arkansas Infantry Regiment.

Daniel was wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on December 31, 1862. He was also hospitalized for illness in November 1864 at Mobile, Alabama. He was captured at Macon, Georgia, in April 1865.

Daniel returned to Dallas County following the end of the war and married Mary Rucks on January 27, 1870. The couple had five children and the family continued to farm in Dallas County. Rufus died on July 3, 1918, and Mary died February 23, 1920; both are buried at Sardis Cemetery near Pine Grove in Dallas County.
