Historical Information

The Second Arkansas Infantry (African Descent) was formed at Helena, Arkansas, following the Emancipation Proclamation. It was raised in early 1863 under the commands of Lieutenant Colonel George W. De Costa and Major George W. Burchard and was composed primarily of freed slaves from the Arkansas River Valley.

Shortly after it was formed, the unit participated in the Battle of Helena. It was formally mustered in on September 4, 1863, and spent the winter as part of the garrison at Little Rock. On March 11, 1864, the unit was designated the Fifty-fourth United States Colored Infantry, and returned to Helena, where it served at the supply depot.

In May 1864, the unit was reassigned to Indian Territory, where it performed escort duty for supply trains, participated in skirmishes along the Arkansas River, and pursued bands of Confederate guerillas. Following the end of the war, the Fifty-fourth returned at Little Rock, where it remained until at was mustered out at the end of 1866.
