Biographical Information

The port of DeValls Bluff was the eastern terminus of the unfinished Little Rock and Memphis Railroad. Throughout the Civil War, supply boats steamed up the White River, depositing provisions at DeValls Bluff to be transported to Little Rock and other outposts. DeValls Bluff was a major Union cavalry depot and supply facility during the latter half of the war.

Alexander Adams served with the 6th Kansas Cavalry, which was organized in Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1861. The regiment fought in several battles in Southwest Missouri and Arkansas from 1862 to the end of 1864. It was stationed at Little Rock from February to early June 1865, as part of the 7th Corps of the District of the Frontier. They were in DeValls Bluff from June 5 to July 27, when they returned to Kansas. They were mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kanas, on August 27, 1865. Adams served first in Company F and then in Company A.
