Scope and Contents

Biographical Information

William Pryor Huddleston Jr. was born March 24, 1836, in McNairy County, Tennessee, the third of eleven children of William Pryor and Sarah Hodges Huddleston. The family emigrated to Independence County, Arkansas, in 1849, where they took up farming. William also became a farmer, starting with a farm of eighty acres.

Huddleston served first in the Arkansas State militia and later in the Union Army. On July 28, 1861, he married Martha J. Ward, whose family had moved from North Carolina to Independence County in 1859. The couple had six children before Martha died in May 1877. In September 1877 he married Orpha E. Blair, a native of East Tennessee, and the couple had five children.

In 1885 Huddleston became a leader in the Agricultural Wheel. The labor organization supported him as candidate for the lower house of the XXVII Arkansas General Assembly. He was also active in the Masons and the Missionary Baptist Church. He died on February 6, 1900.
