Scope and Contents

This collection contains a letter by Daniel C. Leming of the 19th Iowa Infanty to his parents.

Biographical Information

Daniel C. Leming was born in 1842 to Paul and Julia Leming of Clermont County, Ohio. In the mid 1850s the family moved to Hancock County, Illinois, where they farmed. They later moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where Daniel’s father operated a carpenter shop.

Daniel joined the 19th Iowa Infantry when it was organized at Keokuk in August 1862 and was assigned to Company A. The unit was stationed at Forsyth, Missouri, from February to April 1863. Daniel wrote this letter just a short time before the Federal troops were ordered to abandon Forsyth. They burned the town on April 22 and moved east, eventually joining in the Siege of Vicksburg.

Daniel Leming was captured at Atchafalaya, Louisiana, on September 29, 1863, and was held at Camp Ford, Texas, until after the war ended. He was mustered out on July 10, 1865, at Mobile, Alabama. He returned to Iowa, where he later married Mary Grover. The couple had one daughter. Leming worked with his brother-in-law Andrew Grover as a plasterer. He died November 8, 1880, and is buried at Keokuk, Iowa.
