This collection contains a letter written by Private David Patrick of the 40th Iowa Infantry to his mother.


Biographical Information

David Palmer Patrick was born in 1838 to William and Laura Patrick of Union County, Ohio. David moved to Iowa in the 1850s and lived with his sister and brother-in-law, working as a farmer. On June 19, 1860, he married Mary Hull, the daughter of Henry and Viley Drew Hull. The couple had three children.

In May 1863, he mustered into Company K of the 40th Iowa Infantry. The 40th arrived in Arkansas following the Siege of Vicksburg, stationed first at Helena and then at Little Rock. Patrick was wounded in the battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, April 30, 1864. He died at Camden, Arkansas, on November 24, 1864.
