Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains correspondence, receipts, and financial papers of James G. Gordon (1796-1854) of Ashwood, Louisiana, concerning Gordon's land and product sales and his estate, which was administered by John Routh after his death, and his business affairs in Jefferson County, Arkansas, conducted by his agent, Theron Brownfield of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Biographical Note

James G. Gordon was born in Rogersville, Tennessee, in 1796. He married Harriet Moore (d. 1854) and had a son, John Gordon (1836-1871). Gordon was a slaveowner who operated a cotton farm and owned land in Tensas Parish and Concordia Parish in Louisiana, and in Jefferson County, Arkansas.

After Gordon died in 1854, Theron Brownfield, who previously sold land to Gordon, acted as his agent for his business concerns in Jefferson County. Brownfield was born in Illinois in 1813. In 1826, he and his family moved via keelboat to Little Rock. Brownfield, a carpenter, later moved to Pine Bluff. Around 1847, he was George G. Keeler's partner in a contracting venture, which dissolved several years later. During this time, Brownfield also served on the city council in Pine Bluff.
