Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Robert L. Atkins from January 25, 2011, as well as photographs and documents related to his military service.


Biographical Information

Robert L. "Bob" Atkins was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1930. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1947, at the age of seventeen. After completing boot camp, he joined the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and spent eighteen months training in Guam before returning to Camp Pendleton, California, shortly before the North Korean invasion of South Korea. Atkins served in the Korean War for approximately eleven months with the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division beginning in September 1950. His duties included working as a truck driver and he was promoted to sergeant in October 1950. Atkins participated in the Inchon Landing and in an administration landing at Wonson, as well as in action at the Chosin Reservoir. He currently lives in Little Rock, Arkansas.
