Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews. This collection contains an oral history interview with Richard E. Lewis from August 5, 2009, as well as documents pertinent to his military service.


Biographical Information

Richard E. Lewis was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1932 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950 at the age of seventeen. He served thirteen months in the Korean War beginning in February of 1951 as a corporal with the 1st Amphibious Truck Company. His duties included operating an amphibious vehicle commonly known as a DUWK. Lewis participated in Operation Ripper, Mouse Trap, and Killer. He returned to the United States in March of 1952 and remained in the Marine Corps Reserve. After thirty years, he retired from the military. Lewis currently lives in Conway, Arkansas.
