Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of correspondence, banking records, identification cards, and other personal papers of John Henry Harkey, a self-employed laborer, traveling salesman, and land investor.


Biographical Information

John Henry Harkey was born in Waveland (Yell County) Arkansas in 1883. In 1906 he married Amanda Estella Parks; they had two children, John Henry Harkey Jr. and Virginia Harkey. John Henry Harkey described himself as a self-employed laborer and as a traveling salesman. In addition, he advertised land for sale in Arkansas. He moved frequently, living at various times in Booneville, Ark., Russellville, Ark., and North Little Rock, Ark. His travels also took him through Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma. John Henry Harkey died in North Little Rock in 1974 and is buried in Yell County, Ark.
