Scope and Contents

This small collection contains documents and photographs from the family of Gabriel A. J. May and Laura Briggs May.

Biographical Information

Gabriel Andrew Jackson May was born July 19, 1835, in Pittsylvania County, (West) Virginia, to Gabriel and Elizabeth Still May. The family moved to Mississippi in 1836, and in 1849, they settled in Bradley County, Arkansas.

May served during the Civil War in Company D of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry, taking part in battles at Shiloh and Corinth, Mississippi. He was a prisoner of war at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, before returning home shortly before the end of the war.

Gabriel May farmed, worked as a blacksmith and carpenter, and operated a ferry on the Saline River, before opening general stores, first in Rison and finally in Toledo, in what had then become Cleveland County. He also served as postmaster and was elected a special probate judge of the county.

On April 23, 1867, May married Laura Briggs, who was born April 25, 1848, in Mississippi and moved to Arkansas with her widowed mother in 1851. The couple had nine children, two of whom predeceased their parents. Photographs in the collection are believed to be of children and grandchildren of Gabriel and Laura. Laura died on October 17, 1900, and Gabriel died on March 4, 1903.
