Scope and Contents

This collection contains the Civil War diary of an unidentified Union solider of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry.

Historical Information

The 3rd Iowa Cavalry diary was written by an unidentified private serving in Company L, 3rd Iowa Cavalry. His entries begin in November 1861. The diary is centered mostly in Benton and Little Rock, Arkansas, from December 1863 to February 1864.

The 3rd Regiment, Iowa Cavalry was organized by Colonel Cyrus Bussey at Keokuk, Iowa from August 30, 1861 to September 14, 1861. Company L moved to Rolla, Missouri in early February 1862 and then detached to Lebanon, Missouri operating against guerillas until November 1862. They were at Pilot Knob, Missouri from April 2, 1863 to July 1, 1863. On September 22, the company arrived in Little Rock, Arkansas, in route to Benton in Saline County. In November, the author of the diary records that he was detailed to act as hospital steward for the 32nd Iowa Infantry. In early December 1863, they were busy fixing up a school house in Little Rock for use as a hospital, and by December 20, they received orders to move. The author notes that the 3rd Iowa Cavalry, 32nd Iowa Infantry, and 106th Illinois departed Benton, Arkansas. The units remain in Little Rock until February 1864.

The diary's pages are full when it ends early February 1864 with the soldiers arriving by boat into Vicksburg, Mississippi.
