Biographical Information

Horace Anderson Hamilton, the son of Ashley Stanfield and Elizabeth Ann Kirkpatrick Hamilton, was born December 24, 1855, in Sumner County, Tennessee. Ashley (A. S.) Hamilton was the son of Henry (Harry) Hamilton. Horace's wife, Sallie Montgomery, born October 3, 1860, to William and Patricia "Pattie" Payne Montgomery, was also a native of the Mansker's Creek area of Sumner County. This collection contains documents from land transactions by members of the Hamilton and Montgomery families and other Sumner County residents, dating from 1789 to 1875. These include documents relating to the settlement of the estates of Henry Hamilton and A. S. Hamilton and involve individuals living in Kentucky and Texas.

In the years following the Civil War, several members of the Hamilton family migrated to Texas and Arkansas. Horace and Sallie were married in Tennessee on January 13, 1885, and settled in the Nevada County, Arkansas, town of Prescott, where he established mercantile stores. The couple had three sons, William Werner, Joseph Roland, and Rodney Stanfield. The collection includes correspondence written by Horace to his family when they visited in Tennessee, as well as other business and family correspondence and documents.

Sallie passed away on July 20, 1918, at the age of 57. Horace died on September 2, 1924, while on a visit to Tennessee. They are both buried in De Ann Cemetery in Prescott. Their sons continued to reside in Prescott, Arkansas, where Werner and Joseph followed their father in the mercantile business. Joseph later operated Logan's Grocery Store in Prescott. Rodney became an electrician and owned his own shop in Prescott.

Members of the Hamilton family intermarried with the Blakely and Shankle families in Nevada County. The collection includes photographs from these families and other members of the community.
