Scope and Contents

This collection contains pamphlets published or distributed by the Arkansas State Board of Health from approximately 1914 to 1928; some pamphlets are undated but appear to be from that time frame. Pamphlet subjects include board reports; board rules and regulation for health issues related to citizens of Arkansas; information about infant and child hygiene; and information about a variety of communicable diseases.

Biographical Information

The Arkansas State Board of Health was first created in 1881 and a permanent state board was established by Arkansas Act 96 in 1913. The role of the board was the "supervision and control of matters pertaining to the health of the citizens of Arkansas." The board's first state health officer, C. W. Garrison, MD, served from 1913 until 1932. Under his direction, the board focused on the eradication of hookworm, an intestinal disease that was prevalent due to inadequate and unsanitary construction or absence of toilet facilities (privies), and other health problems like malaria, tuberculosis, venereal diseases, and typhoid. Other pamphlets in this collection give instructions to new mothers regarding infant and child hygiene.
