Scope and Contents

This collection contains Clifton Hull's research about Arkansas railroads and the history of the Arkansas River. It is divided into three series.

Series I: Railroads contains research information about Arkansas railroads. Boxes 1-3 hold Hull's manuscripts and articles about railroad history (both published and unpublished). Boxes 4-10 contains research about the Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad. The Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad written by Hull and William A. Pollard was published in 1995. Series II: Arkansas River: Born in the Shining Mountains contains a manuscript written by Hull, as well as research materials and photographs. Series III: Artifacts contains Hull's personal cameras.


Biographical Information

Clifton Eugene "Gene" Hull was born on June 8, 1920, in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He worked as a draftsman and outdoor recreational planner with the U.S. Corps of Engineers where he was instrumental in the development of the Arkansas River for commercial navigation. He was a member of the National Railway Historical Society and a charter member of the Arkansas Railroad Club. Hull authored Railroad Stations and Trains through Arkansas and the Southwest, The Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad (with William A. Polland), and Shortline Railroads of Arkansas, as well as numerous historical articles on railroading in Arkansas and other similar subjects. Clifton Hull died on December 2, 2011, at the age of ninety-one.
