Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs and oral histories detailing twentieth century history in Portland, Arkansas, and the surrounding towns and countryside of eastern Ashley County, Arkansas.

Historical Information

Ashley County, Arkansas, was established November 30, 1848, in southeastern Arkansas. Portland already existed at that time as a settlement near Bayou Bartholomew, although it did not incorporate until 1893, when the railroad arrived. Agriculture and the timber industry provide most of the jobs in the Portland area. Many small rural schools were scattered around the county until school districts began to be consolidated. During the 1990s, the Portland Arkansas History Project was organized by the Friends of Portland to preserve the local history of eastern Ashley County. Old prints of photographs were donated or loaned to the Project, and photographic reproductions of the original prints were kept in scrapbooks. Oral interviews of long-time residents of the area were also recorded around 1994.
