Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Louie J. Konings from October 28, 2009, as well as documents relating to his military service.


Biographical Information

Louie J. Konings was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1931 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1950 at the age of nineteen. He served in the Korean War for two months and twenty-two days beginning in December 1950 as a corporal with D Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division. As the radio operator for the company commander, his duties included calling in air strikes and communicating with UN and ROK troops. In March 1951, Konings was wounded in action near Kori-gol, Korea. He returned to the United States and was honorably discharged in 1952. Konings currently lives in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
