Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence and other information on the Green family, which settled in and around what is now northern Lonoke County before the Civil War.

Biographical Information

Jefferson Green was born November 19, 1802, in Virginia. By 1827 he and his wife Martha were living in Alabama, where five of their ten children were born. A daughter was born to them in 1838 in Missouri, after which time they lived in Hardeman, Tennessee. In October 1860 Green acquired 280 acres of land in what is now northern Lonoke County, near the town of Austin. According to the United States census for that year, he, his wife, and six of their children were living in Arkansas at that time. Green joined the 1st (Dobbins') Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry, which saw action in Helena, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and in Price's raid on Missouri. Green died on April 24, 1881, and is buried in the Old Austin Cemetery.

Lonoke County was formed in 1873. Several of Green's children remained in the area, including Christopher Columbus Green (1831-1906), John Cornelius Green (1839-1911), and Sparks Martin Green (1843-1884). Correspondence shared among three generations of the family depict everyday life in Arkansas shortly before the Civil War, during the Civil War, and through the rest of the nineteenth century.
