Biographical Information

George Wesley May (known as Wesley) was born January 19, 1921, to Orville M. and Ada Katherine May of North Little Rock. Orville May was an engineer with the railroad. Wesley was the third of seven children, five boys and two girls. He attended North Little Rock High School for the school year of 1937-38. On December 5, 1938, he married Dorothy Whittecar; during the time period covered by this collection, they had one son, Wesley.

May was employed by the North Little Rock Boys Club as an instructor in woodworking and supervisor of the swimming pool. He served briefly with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserves on December 10, 1941. He served as a Chief Carpenters Mate on USS Fond Du Lac in the Pacific Theater during 1944 and 1945. He was discharged and returned to North Little Rock in September, 1945. Following his discharge, he trained for the position of fireman with the railroad.
