Historical Information

This collection contains material related to the Arkansas Autumn Project (1980-1984) sponsored by the Central Arkansas Area Agency on Aging. The project was funded by the Arkansas Endowment for the Humanities, Arkansas Community Foundation, Arkansas Museum Services, The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Bank and Trust, and Georgia-Pacific. Jeaninne Lamb was the project director. A pamphlet produced by the project describes Arkansas Autumn as "a study, as well as a documentation and survey, probing deeply into the questions of creativity and innovation in life and aging."

Events generated by the project included photographic exhibits, several day-long "Elderfest" programs, public presentations in Arkansas schools, and various publications, including the book A Fine Age: Creativity as a Key to Successful Aging. The book, published in 1984, was written by journalist Dana Steward and photography was done by Jeaninne Lamb. A Fine Age profiled 24 older Arkansas artists and included authors, painters, weavers, and metalworkers. Most of the material in this collection is related to the artists profiled in the book.
