Scope and Contents

This collection contains a letter dated August 9, 1865, written at Little Rock, Ark., by Captain George N. Johnson of the 18th Illinois Infantry to his friend Clara, and a cover postmarked June 11, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and addressed to Clara Slaten in Newbern, Illinois.

Historical Information

The 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment, originally organized in May 1861 at Anna, Illinois, arrived in Arkansas following the siege of Vicksburg and took part in Steele's Expedition against Little Rock in September 1863. It was necessary to re-organize the regiment in the summer of 1864 when many had finished their original three year enlistment.

Following its reorganization, in March 1865, the regiment was made up of two companies of veterans, one company of new three year recruits, and seven companies of one year recruits. George N. Johnson of Scott County, Illinois, was a one year recruit, assigned as first lieutenant in Company K. He was promoted to captain on July 21, 1865. He remained at Little Rock until December 16, 1865, when the unit was mustered out and returned to Camp Butler in Illinois to be discharged.
