Arrangement

This collection is arranged by type of document, chronologically, and alphabetically into five series. Series I contains Arkansas land survey documents from years before the formation of the territory of Arkansas, as well as other original land documents dated mainly in the 1840s, 1850s and 1860s, with a few from later years. A few of these documents are filed with the oversized items in Series IV. Series II contains miscellaneous public documents. Series III contains miscellaneous personal documents, principally from the Showen family. Series IV, Oversized Documents, includes land documents, two letter books, and other miscellaneous items. Series V contains memorabilia and photographs.

Land descriptions given in the various documents are abbreviated in the finding aid to include only the section, township (Twp.), and range (Rg.) in which each piece of land is located.

Biographical Information

This collection contains large numbers of public documents, especially related to land surveys and transactions from the territory and state of Arkansas. The documents are believed to have been collected by Frank Showen during the years he worked on planning and statistical projects under the supervision of the Works Progress Administration.

Frank Showen was born in Little Rock on April 22, 1910, to William and Mamie McCoppin Showen. He worked in clerical and management positions during the 1930s and the early 1940s, for organizations including the Pulaski Planning Board, the Agricultural Marketing Service, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He entered the army on September 21, 1942, hoping that this work experience would qualify him for officer's candidate school. However, his application was denied.

Frank Showen returned from Europe due to illness and in February 1944 received a disability discharge from the Army. As described in a letter included in this collection, Showen believed that the significant periods of unemployment he experienced in later years were related to the discharge he received for what was essentially a temporary condition. Showen died February 22, 1986.

The collection contains documents related to Showen's military service, including his separation record, as well as family correspondence from that time.

In addition to Showen family correspondence and documents, the collection includes a small number of items from Mady Armstrong, a resident of Searcy, Arkansas. She was born on October 18, 1892, in Alabama, and died in Searcy on June 14, 1969.
