Historical Information

The Arkansas Woman's Christian Temperance Union was organized in 1879. It is associated with the National WCTU, which was formed in Ohio in 1874. The original purpose of the WCTU was to persuade citizens to abstain from drinking alcohol. Members were very zealous in their campaign. They influenced many politicians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, even though women could not yet vote. Many WCTU members were also active in the American women's suffrage movement.

The Eighteenth Amendment, passed by Congress in 1919, prohibited the manufacture and sale of intoxicating beverages. The Amendment was repealed in 1933, with the adoption of the Twenty-first Amendment. The WCTU has continued to advocate abstinence from alcohol. The organization seeks to educate the public, particularly young people, about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. In addition, they promote humanitarian programs, good citizenship, and world peace. The World Woman's Christian Temperance Union, founded in 1883 by Frances Willard, has groups in 72 countries. It claims to be the world's oldest continuing organization for women. The WCTU headquarters is located in Evanston, Illinois. Archives are located in the University of Rhode Island Library and in the Billy Graham Center Archives in Wheaton, Illinois.
