Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Lavern Penn from September 21, 2010, as well as documents relating to his military service.


Biographical Information

Lavern Penn was born in Lynn, Arkansas, in 1927. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1950 at the age of twenty-three. Penn served in the Korean War for ten months beginning in May 1951, as a sergeant in division headquarters of the 24th Infantry Division. Initially a clerk typist, Penn was later put in charge of the personnel section of the 11th Field Artillery Battalion. Penn returned to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, where he continued his service until he was discharged in 1952. He currently lives in Heber Springs, Arkansas.
