Arrangement

This collection is arranged by material type and chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes correspondence, photographs, negatives, marriage certificates, and mementos pertaining to Olga Pamplin Brewer, Lois Brewer Needham, Russell Needham and other Pamplin and Brewer family members. Most correspondence consists of friendship and love letters from several suitors to Lois Brewer during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Biographical Information

Olga Runie (Ruth) Pamplin was born in Texas on September 4, 1900. She married Castro Collier (Charly) Brewer (year of birth, 1890) in 1920. Their first daughter, Lois Elaine, was born in Oklahoma on July 11, 1921. Lois Brewer's siblings were Castro Clayton, Walter, Dorine, and Ava Belle. The family moved to Paris, Arkansas, by 1930 and Charly Brewer's occupation is listed in the 1930 census as electrician. Most of the correspondence in the collection sent to Olga Brewer are sympathy cards related to the death of her husband (in 1954) and her mother (in 1955). Olga Ruth Brewer died in Paris, Arkansas, on January 4, 1988.

Lois Elaine Brewer graduated from Paris High School ca. 1938 and in 1944 she married Russell Lowell Needham, a graduate of Subiaco Academy. Most of the correspondence in the collection that was sent to Lois Brewer (Needham) are love letters from several suitors, including her future husband. Lois Needham died in Paris, Arkansas, on February 28, 2007.

Russell Needham was born February 3, 1917, and, after World War II, he played baseball for a number of years for the minor league team the Albany Senators. Because he spent several months each year away from his family, his letters to Lois Needham describe his transient life as a ball player. Russell Needham died in Paris, Arkansas, on November 15, 1991. Both Lois and Russell Needham are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery on Route 22, Paris, Arkansas.

Other Pamplin family members represented in the collection are Arska, Ergle, and Estle Pamplin (probably Olga Brewer's brothers), as well as W. G., Fanty, R. V., and Wanda Faye Pamplin (relationship to Olga Brewer unknown). Other Brewer family members represented in the collection are Lois Needham's siblings, Castro Clayton, Walter, Dorine, and Ava Belle.
