Arrangement

This collection is arranged topically and chronologically. It is arranged in thirteen series, the first eight containing documents. Series I, family histories, and Series III, religious histories, each contain a subseries for Little Rock, one for the rest of the state (with the names of the towns given in the folder titles), and a third for extended or general information. Substantial information on family owned businesses is included in the family history series; series II contains extended and miscellaneous business history.

Other document series cover background history, community involvement, organizations, and the research and writing process. The remaining five series contain photographs, artifacts, books, newspapers and oversized items.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials collected in the course of Carolyn Gray LeMaster's research on the history of the Jewish people in Arkansas and the writing of A Corner of the Tapestry: A History of the Jewish Experience in Arkansas, 1820s-1990s, as well as her service in the Jewish community and on the boards of historical organizations. The core of the collection is the family and individual stories, as well as business and organizational histories. It contains primary sources, both copies and original, copies of thousands of newspaper clippings, journal articles and book excerpts, photographs and artifacts.

Notes: The abbreviation CGL is frequently used for the author's name. Because individual folders contain such a wide date range, including material both from the original events and the time of the research itself, dates have been omitted on many of the descriptions.

This collection includes material copied from other archival collections. It is the researcher's responsibility to pursue permissions related to this material.
