This collection contains the contents of three scrapbook and photograph albums. The albums have been disassembled. Each album's cover folder is followed by folders containing the contents of that album.


Scope and Contents

This collection contains memorabilia, newspaper clippings, and photographs from three scrapbooks created by Virginia, Elizabeth, and/or Frances Holtzendorff.


Biographical Information

Most of the material in this collection of three scrapbooks represents high school and college activities and events in the lives of sisters Virginia, Elizabeth, and Frances Holtzendorff during the years 1930 to 1940.

Virginia Sheffield Holtzendorff was born in Hazen, Arkansas, on December 23, 1914. She was the eldest daughter of attorney J. F. Holtzendorff and Anna Kocourek Holtzendorff. Virginia Holtzendorff attended the Progressive Series Teachers College of St. Louis, Missouri (St. Louis Institute of Music), Northwestern University or Washington University, and Louisiana State University where she received her bachelor of arts degree. After the death of her father Virginia moved back to Hazen, Arkansas, to care for her mother. She taught piano in the Hazen, Des Arc, and Carlisle public school districts for over 30 years and was the organist for the First Baptist Church of Hazen for many years. Virginia Holtzendorff died in Hazen on August 15, 2005.

Elizabeth Witherspoon Holtzendorff (Gibbons) was born in Hazen, Arkansas on March 18, 1916. She was a secretary for the Arkansas State Wage and Hour Division and for the Little Rock District Attorney. She was married to Joel Gibbons. Elizabeth Gibbons died on August 7, 1991.

Frances Drake Holtzendorff (Davis) was born in Hazen, Arkansas, on May 14, 1917 and died in March 1989. She was an attorney.
