Historical Information

The Arkansas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was formed in 1896. On November 29 of that year, Articles of Incorporation of the Supreme Lodge of the Sons and Daughters were filed with the Pulaski County Circuit Court. The stated objective of the association was "to form a more perfect union between the ex-Confederate soldiers, their wives, sons and daughters, and their families and only such person who were and are now in sympathy with the Southern Cause, and who believe that we were prompted purely by patriotic motives by engaging in defense of the South." The organization insisted on referring to the "War Between the States," rather than the "Civil War."

The United Daughters of the Confederacy has supported numerous charitable and civic projects, both for the descendants of the Confederate veterans and for the larger community. Members have raised funds for erecting Confederate memorials across the South. Arkansas UDC members have been instrumental in preserving many historic structures throughout the state.
