Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents and memorabilia accumulated by Jeanne Mathis McDaniel during her time as a student in Lonoke, Ark., and later as a resident of Little Rock. Many of the items appear to have been part of a scrapbook at one time. The collection also includes a scrapbook on the history of Arkansas which contains an autographed picture of Governor Carl E. Bailey. The scrapbook, completed as a sixth grade project at Lonoke Elementary School, was judged best in the class and was sent to the 1939 World’s Fair to be included as part of the Arkansas exhibit.

Biographical Information

Jeanne (Martha Jean) Mathis was born October 17, 1927, in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Everett and Bessie Bradford Mathis. She grew up in Lonoke, Arkansas, and attended Lonoke public schools, graduating from Lonoke High School in 1945.

Mathis attended Lindenwood Junior College in St. Charles, Missouri, for two years. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1949, with a degree in economics and business administration. Following college, she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and later for the Little Rock office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mathis married Ernest L. McDaniel, who was Assistant Adjutant General of the Arkansas National Guard under Governor Francis Cherry. The McDaniels had two children, James L. McDaniel and Mary Elizabeth McDaniel. Col. Ernest McDaniel died in 1967.
