Scope and Contents

This collection contains research material accumulated by Sybil F. Crawford primarily in the process of writing Jubilee: Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas: Its First 150 Years, published in 1993 by the Mount Holly Cemetery Association. Crawford continued to collect material about the cemetery after the publication of the book.

The collection contains three series. Series I contains five boxes of documents. Most of the items in this series are photocopies of primary and secondary sources. Boxes 1 and 2 contain biographies of persons interred, arranged alphabetically. Other documents are arranged first topically, then chronologically, in the following manner: general histories of people, the history and administration of the cemetery, correspondence, newspaper clippings, the research and writing process for the book, histories of community organizations, and local and state history.

Series II contains five photograph albums, and Series III contains maps of the cemetery. The maps are stored in an oversized folder in the Butler Center Map Collection cabinet.

Biographical Information

Sybil Frances Crawford was born October 21, 1929, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to John Lawrence and Ruby Ogram Card. She married Thomas E. Crawford, also of Little Rock, in 1950. The couple later moved to Dallas, Texas, where Sybil worked as an international commercial lender. She continued to follow her avocation of historical research and writing, with a focus on cemeteries, especially Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas. Crawford died on February 20, 2014.

Mount Holly Cemetery was founded in 1843 when Chester Ashley and Beebe Roswell gave four square blocks of land to the City of Little Rock for burial purposes only. The city government supervised the cemetery until 1877, when the Mount Holly Cemetery Commission was set up. In 1915, the ladies' Mount Holly Cemetery Association formed and has been the cemetery's guiding entity since.

In 1993, the Mount Holly Cemetery Association observed the cemetery’s sesquicentennial with the publication of two books, a history and a burial index. Sybil Crawford wrote Jubilee: Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas: Its First 150 Years, and co-wrote Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas Burial Index, 1843-1993, with Mary Fletcher Worthen. After the publication of the books, Crawford continued to collect historical material about Mount Holly Cemetery.
