Scope and Contents

This collection contains various Yell County legal records, most coverning the time period 1866-1891.

Biographical Information

Named in honor of Arkansas's second governor, Archibald Yell, Yell County was formed in 1840 from portions of Scott and Pope counties. It is located in west central Arkansas and has county seats in both Danville and Dardanelle.

The military road between Fort Smith and Little Rock (now Highway 22) runs through the county as does the Arkansas River, making the county a focus of both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Immigrants from Tennessee and North Carolina before the Civil War, and from Eastern Europe during the post-reconstruction era, were instrumental in the developement of the county.

Most of the records in this collection cover the years 1860-1911. During that period, the population of Yell County grew from 6,333 to 26,323.
