Scope and Contents

This collection contains principally letters written by Henry T. Phillips to his family while he served in Helena, Arkansas, with the 47th Iowa Infantry. Also included is a letter written to Phillips and a letter written to Mattie Sawyers, who later became his wife.


Biographical Information

Henry Theodore Phillips was born in Indiana about 1845, and moved to Iowa with his family during 1859. He worked with his father in his dry goods store in Eddyville and Unionville, Iowa. In May 1864, he began a 100 day enlistment in the 47th Iowa Infantry. His unit was stationed at Helena, Arkansas, where he worked as a clerk in the commissary. After he returned home in September 1864, he worked for a short time in a mercantile business in Burlington, Iowa. He married Mattie Sawyers in 1869, and returned to work with his father in Unionville. He died April 15, 1911.
