Biographical Information

Darrel B. Couch was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1938. After graduating high school in California, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in June 1956. He first attended bomb navigation technician school and was later trained on electronic countermeasures before entering pilot training. In these early years with the Air Force, Couch was stationed across the United States including air force bases in California, Colorado, Idaho, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Couch served in Vietnam for one year beginning in September 1966. He had several assignments including flying a F-100 Super Sabre jet with the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron out of Phan Rang Air Base and flying an O-1 Bird Dog observation airplane with the 1st Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade out of Lai Khe Military Base. Couch also came in contact with the indigenous Vietnamese people called Montagnard while stationed at Lac Thien Special Forces Camp.

He remained in the Air Force after Vietnam and was stationed in the Philippines, Arkansas, Texas, and Japan. Couch flew eleven airplanes for a total of 5,200 hours before retiring in 1976 as a major.
