Biographical Information

Artie Cozie Tyler was born on January 27, 1911, in Graysonia, Arkansas, to Valentine and Artanie Tyler. Artie won the title of “Miss Little Rock” in 1929 and represented the city in the Fourth International Pageant of Pulchritude/Tenth Annual Bathing Girl Revue held in Galveston, Texas, in the same year. She married Jimmy Crenshaw ca. 1939, and the couple had at least one daughter, Carol. Artie later married Mr. Brasfield of Dumas, Arkansas (ca. 1975). Artie Tyler Crenshaw Brasfield died on August 17, 1992, and is buried in Dumas.

The International Pageant of Pulchritude was a beauty contest begun in 1926 in Galveston, Texas, and was held annually until 1935. The pageant was held in Galveston until 1932; it was later held in Brussels, Belgium. The title of “Miss Universe” was awarded the winner of the event.

The contemporary Miss Universe Pageant was created in 1952 and was held in California.
