Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with James R. Blaylock from October 10, 2009, as well as documents and photographs pertinent to his military service.


Biographical Information

James R. Blaylock was born in Jenks, Oklahoma, in 1928 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1948 at the age of seventeen. He served four months in the Korea War beginning in September 1950 as a corporal with Baker Company of the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Marine Division. His duties included operating a .30 caliber machine gun as part of a machine gun platoon. Blaylock participated in the Inchon Landing and the subsequent recapturing of Seoul as well as in action at the Chosin Reservoir. After injuring his knee in December 1950, he was sent to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Yokosuska, Japan. While recovering, he returned to duty at Camp Otsu in Japan, before receiving a dependency discharge in April 1951. Blaylock currently lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
