Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews. This collection contains an oral history interview with Frank A. Fowlkes from January 19, 2010, as well as photograph related to his military service.


Biographical Information

Frank A. Fowlkes was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1932. He served one year in the National Guard before being discharged and enlisting in the Marine Corps in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1950 at the age of seventeen. Fowlkes served in the Korean War for eleven and a half months beginning in January 1951, as a corporal with B Company, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He participated in the spring offensive of 1951, and numerous battles in the Punchbowl area. For eight months, Fowlkes was part of a rifle platoon firing a M1 Rifle and a Browning Automatic Rifle. He also served as the company mail clerk and runner for a short time. After the Korean War, he returned to Arkansas. Fowlkes currently lives in North Little Rock.
