Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Harry K. Peterson from June 16, 2010, as well as a photograph related to his military service.


Biographical Information

Harry K. Peterson was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1931. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1948 at the age of sixteen. Peterson served in the Korean War for ten months beginning in July 1950 as a sergeant with the 1st Ordnance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. His main duties included working as an ammunition technician and guarding ammunition during transport, but he served as an infantryman when necessary. Peterson participated in action at the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon Landing and subsequent liberation of Seoul, the Chosin Reservoir, and the Spring Offensive of 1951. After the Korean War, Peterson remained in the Marine Corps and later served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Peterson retired to Arkansas and currently lives in Russellville.
