Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains documents and photographs related to the military service of Bobby L. Coker.


Biographical Information

Bobby Lewis Coker was born in Harrison, Arkansas, in 1929. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1949 at the age of seventeen and worked at Arkansas Power and Light Company (AP&L) after high school. Coker served in the Korean War for almost nineteen months beginning in August 1950 with the 936th Field Artillery Battalion. He served as a supply sergeant and observation point sergeant until breaking his leg and traveling to Japan for medical attention. When he returned to Korea, he served as an infantry squad leader in the 35th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Coker remained in the military after the Korean War. He served as a full-time National Guard Technician before retiring in 1984 as a colonel. After over thirty-eight years of military service, Coker served on the staff of Park Hill Baptist Church in North Little Rock for ten years. He died on January 23, 2015.
