Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Sedric A. Wirt from July 24, 2009, as well as photographs and documents pertinent to his military service.


Biographical Information

Sedric Allen Wirt was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1932 and enlisted in the Army in September of 1948 at the age of seventeen. He took basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and advanced infantry training at Camp Carson, Colorado, before moving to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin to train ROTC and National Guardsmen. Wirt served four months in the Korean War with Company D of the 31st Regiment, 7th Infantry Division beginning in September of 1950. In November of 1950, he was wounded and subsequently taken prisoner at the Chosin Reservoir. Wirt was held for ten days in a small home with no food or medical attention before he was rescued by U.S. forces. While in captivity, Wirt developed frostbite causing the eventual amputation of his feet. After his recovery, he returned to Arkansas. Wirt passed away on December 8, 2010.
