Biographical Information

Little Rock Central High School traces it establishment to 1869. The high school went through several name changes and locations through the years to include: Sherman High, Scott Street High, Peabody High, and Little Rock High. In 1905, Little Rock High School opened at 14th and Cumberland Streets. The current school located at 14th and Park Streets opened in 1927. At the time of it’s opening, it received national attention as the largest and most beautiful high school in the country. The first to graduate from the new location was the Class of 1928.

Little Rock High School was also the original home of Little Rock Junior College (now the University of Arkansas at Little Rock) from 1927-1931. The junior college was a part of the Little Rock School District until 1957.

In 1953, Little Rock High became Little Rock Central High School. The decade of the 1950s also brought renewed national attention when Central High became the focus for the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957.
