Biographical Information

The 126th Illinois Infantry was organized in Alton, Illinois, and took the field on November 20, 1862. After time spent guarding fortifications and supply lines in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, the regiment took part in the Siege of Vicksburg and later in General Steeleā€™s expedition to capture Little Rock. The unit was then stationed at DeValls Bluff until August 1864. The regiment then moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where it was mustered out of service on July 12, 1865.

It was during the time in DeValls Bluff that Lt. and Provost Marshal Charles M. Knox of Company I published this broadside containing instructions for those serving on guard duty. Knox was a grocer from Rock Island, Illinois, who enlisted in the 126th Illinois Infantry on August 6, 1842.
