Scope and Contents

This collection contains a letter by Cpl. Fayette Allen of Spring Prairie, Wisconsin, to his aunt, written while he was stationed near Little Rock with Company I of the 28th Wisconsin Infantry.

Biographical Information

The 28th Wisconsin Infantry was recruited in the summer of 1862, primarily in Waukesha and Walworth Counties, Wisconsin, in response to President Lincoln’s second call for volunteers. The regiment was mustered in on October 13 at Camp Washburn, Milwaukee, and left Wisconsin on December 20. After a brief time in Columbus, Kentucky, the 28th arrived in Helena, Arkansas, on January 5, 1863. The unit was part of Steele’s Expedition to capture Little Rock and later served in Pine Bluff.

Fayette L. Allen was born April 18, 1843, to Lucius and Sarah Ann Barnes Allen of Auburn, Ohio. Sarah died in 1847, and Lucius married her sister Juliette. In late 1849 the family moved to the area of Spring Prairie, Wisconsin, where they were farmers.

Fayette Allen enlisted on August 21, 1862, in Company I of the 28th Wisconsin. After service in Helena, Little Rock, and Pine Bluff, he died of disease at Little Rock on January 24, 1865. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
