Biographical Information

Emma Bates was born about 1905 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the daughter of William H. and Mary Bates. Emma graduated from El Dorado High School, El Dorado, Arkansas in 1924 and worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and at a local hotel in El Dorado. In 1929, she moved to Dallas, Texas, where she continued her career as a PBX operator for Texas Power and Light and the Dallas Railway and Terminal Company.
