Biographical Information

Sarah Jane Parke was born June 17, 1835, in Washington County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of John and Cynthia Edmondson Ish. In 1856, she married Frank Parke (1829-1902), a Ft. Smith resident who was born in Ireland but became a leading Fort Smith merchant and capitalist. Their children included: Myrtle M. (1859-1937), Frank Jr. (1866-1923), Mary (1869-1960), Adelaide (1873-1948), Phebe (1875-1940), and A.W. [Augustus Winfield] Parke (1878-1961).

She was involved in church-related activities for many years and served as state president of the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

In 1918, Sarah Parke died at age eighty-three in Fort Smith.
