The school started with a student body of approximately 700 and currently has an enrollment of over 1,300 students.

Closed by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus for the 1958 school year (along with Central High School, Little Rock Technical High School and Horace Mann High School) because of opposition to integration, the school was reopened in the fall of 1959.
