Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, legal documents, estate papers, and financial statements accumulated by W. E. Lenon of Peoples Bank, Little Rock, Ark., in his work as business agent for members of the Dickinson and McGehee families, and especially for Rose Dickinson McGehee and her daughter Fanny Rose McGehee Ogden. It includes records of the estates of Fannie Rose Dickinson, Rose Dickinson McGehee, W. W. Dickinson Sr., Abner McGehee Sr., Ben C. McGehee, and Scott Dickinson. In addition, the collection also contains records for the following businesses owned principally by members of the Dickinson and McGehee families: Big Rock Stone & Material Company and Southwest Realty Company (Dickinson family), McGehee Hotel Company, and Stewart McGehee Construction Company, (McGehee family).


Biographical Information

Rose Dickinson McGehee was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 18, 1886, the daughter of William W. Dickinson Sr. (1857-1928) and Fannie Rose Dickinson (1863-1932). This collection contains records from the estate of her father, including materials related to family owned businesses. Rose married Benjamin Collins McGehee in 1913. Following the death of her husband, she spent part of her time in New York City, where she died on July 29, 1938.

Ben C. McGehee (Benjamin Collins) was born in McGehee, Arkansas on November 5, 1884. He was the son of Abner McGehee Sr. (1851-1908), the founder of the town of McGehee. He had numerous business interests, including the Stewart McGehee Construction Company and the McGehee Hotel Company, which built and managed the Ben McGehee Hotel (later the Grady Manning). Records pertaining to these companies are included in this collection. He died on December 25, 1931, in Little Rock, Arkansas

Fannie Rose McGehee Odgen was born to Ben C. McGehee and Rose Emily Dickinson McGehee in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 24, 1915. She married John Deason Ogden on June 23, 1937, at Trinity Church in New York City. She died on April 16, 1967, in Ithaca, New York.

Warren E. Lenon, 1867-1946, came to Little Rock from Iowa in 1888. In 1902, he organized the Peoples Savings Bank, which he continued to lead for several decades. It was as a trust officer for the bank that he acted as business agent for the McGehee and Dickinson family interests.
